Hotei

A person in present Zhejiang in China. He called himself Kaishi, rather small, having wrinkles on his forehead, big bellied. He was called Hotei (a bag) Osho(priest) for carrying a big bag and a cane with him. He is said to have died in about 916. He predicted people’s good luck and bad luck and the weather while he was alive. He came to be said to be a transformation of Miroku because they saw the miracle that he kept his bag dried even in sleeping in snow. The statue of Hotei in China came to be enshrined as Miroku Bosatsu. He is one of the Seven Fortune Gods.
