Komainu

Buddhism came into Japan, and various kinds of butsuzo also came, at the same time Komainu(guardian dog) got worshipped as the guardian of the main buildings of temples. The origin of Komainu is the lion, the king of beasts. These guardians are always found in pairs ; one with a "a" shaped mouth facing the other with a "un" mouth.
